The greatest thing in all the world is to be able to know that you have eternal life in fellowship with our Creator, the God of the universe. Because eternal life is forever. How can you know for sure that you are going to heaven and will have eternal life? The Bible says there is only one way. Jesus said in John 14:6, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, but through Me.” How can we come to God, the Father, through His Son, Jesus?

The Scriptures make it very clear. In the New Testament Romans 3:23 states, “for all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.” Everyone has come up short of the perfection of God. Whether you have lied, lusted, hated, or gossiped, everyone has missed the standard God set for us. Mark Spitz won seven gold medals in the Olympics in swimming. If you and I lined up on the West coast of the United States with Mark Spitz to dive into the Pacific Ocean to swim to Hawaii we all would make it part of the way, but all of us would sink, short of our goal of making it to Hawaii, even Mark Spitz. That is what God is saying in Romans 3:23. All of us in our thoughts, words, or deeds, have sinned and fallen short of God’s perfect standard.

Because we have all sinned, the Bible specifies we have become separated from God. Romans 6:23 tells us, “The wages of sin is death…”. “Wages” are what you receive for doing a job. They are the proper payment for doing that job. God has designed a principle into His creation. The proper payment for sinning is death, spiritual separation from God forever. So every person that has sinned (that’s all of us) is spiritually separated from God.

What is the solution to our separation? God initiated it to us. It is found in Romans 5:8. “But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” Jesus was God’s Son, perfect and sinless. He died as a substitute for the death required of us for our sin. Larry Moyer of Evantell ministry puts it this way. “Suppose you are in a hospital dying of cancer. I come to you and say, ‘Let’s take the cancer cells from your body and put them into my body. If that were possible what would happen to me? What would happen to you?” I would die because I now have your terminal cancer cells in me. You would live because you would no longer have the cancer cells in you. I would die instead of you. That is what Jesus did for you. He took your sins on Himself and died on the cross in place of your death. II Corinthians 5:21 in the New Testament puts it this way, “He (God) made Him (Jesus) who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.” That is a great exchange, don’t you think?

Three days later Christ resurrected from the dead to demonstrate the effectiveness of His payment for our sins. He had conquered sin and death.

Knowing these three truths however is not enough, that we have all sinned, our sins have separated us from God, and Jesus Christ, God’s Son died in our place to pay for our sin and resurrected from the dead. We must believe these truths personally as a decision of our will. We must trust in Jesus Christ as our personal Savior. We must change our mind and heart (repent) about whatever kind of way we previously thought would get us to heaven and put our trust in Christ as the only way to get to heaven.

It is then and then alone that Romans 6:23 tells us we will receive eternal life. “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

Right now while your computer is still on would you like to bow before God and put your trust in the Lord Jesus Christ as your personal Savior? Here is a prayer you could sincerely pray to God to reflect your trust in Christ as a decision of your will. Remember God is not so concerned with your words as He is with the attitude of your heart.

Dear God
I know I have sinned and deserve to be punished with death, eternal separation from God, for my sins. I now believe that Christ died for me to pay for my sins and resurrected from the dead. As a decision of my will, I trust in the Lord Jesus Christ alone as my Savior. Thank you for forgiving my sins and giving me eternal life with you. In Jesus name, Amen.
